Lanyards of war!

Simoney Badges is a great name badges company but did you know that they also produce great lanyards. Lanyards were first used in the late 19th century. A lanyard is basically a small band of material which was used to hold a knife that the person intends to keep concealed. These kind of knives were as a weapons. Lanyards were very common during those times because each and every person used to tie their knives with lanyards. Historically, lanyards were worn on the left shoulder with the end containing the knife pushed into the left top pocket. Lanyards are still manufactured for this purpose.

The name Lanyard has usually referred to a piece of rope or cord used to hold items to the body, but one of the first uses of the word lanyards was recorded in 1626, when it was used as a term for a marine device to tie down items on a sea going vessel. European army troops in the nineteenth century started using lanyards to hold knives. They were originally designed to be worn around the middle of the body, at the waist, but soldiers on horse back found it too awkward to wear while riding and quickly transferred to wearing them around their necks. These neck lanyards held knives in such a way that they were hidden from their foes, making it one of the most useful tools on the battlefield.

Large knives are dangerous.  When you get a kilo of sharp steel swinging around, the possibility for injury is big, and that is especially dangerous in a survival situation. If you have cold or wet hands, the chances of a knife slipping increases as you get tired or over familiar with it

One way to prevent this is to slip your wrist through a lanyard attached to the knife, and twist enough to close the loop so that if you drop the knife, you can catch it.

Sometimes you might be in difficult terrain. If you are worried about falling while using the knife, you might want to be able to dump it quickly, but still have some control should it slip from your hand while using it.

Later lanyards were worn on the right shoulder instead of the left. This was because of the problem of trying to remove the knife from the pocket below a ammunition bandolier, which had obviously become more significant with the increased number of soldiers bearing rifles instead of swords and just knives. As time passed, in 1933, the concept of keeping the knife tied to lanyards was totally eliminated. Then the lanyard was used as a straight cord, worn  as a decorative item to compliment one’s dress, with the exception of the revolver lanyard. Pictures of officers wearing these types of Lanyards  as they charged from the trenches are seen frequently. The Lanyard still went around the neck, and then one end was attached to a ring on the revolver, long enough so that when the revolver was not being used or carried in te hand, the lanyard would reach as far as the side holster. These days, lanyards are mostly used for holding name badges which people tie around their neck.
