The Fred Perry polo shirt is as popular today as it was when he introduced the new, soft collared, short sleeved, knitted white cotton pique ‘tennis shirt’ at Wimbledon in 1952. Fred Perry polo shirts with the iconic laurel badge, a recognised symbol for style and quality, have a worldwide following.
Born in Cheshire in 1909. Fred Perry became a champion English tennis player at the age of 26. He won the Wimbledon men’s championship 3 times in a row and became an English sporting icon. Today he is as well known for his polo shirts with their distinctive laurel logo as he is for his tennis.
The polo shirt really started life as tennis shirt. In the early nineteenth and twentieth centuries the standard dress for players was tennis whites, typically white, stiff collared, long sleeved, button fronted shirts - not the most comfortable garment for an energetic sport. In 1926, Rene’ Lacoste the French tennis champion designed a white short sleeve loosely knit pique cotton shirt in a material he called “petit pique”. With its soft collar, short-cuffed sleeves, button placket and longer shirttail in back (for tucking in trousers or shorts) the new stylish easy to wear tennis shirt was a success with both tennis players and polo players, who quickly adopted it as their own. By the time Fred Perry launched his iconic brand at Wimbledon 1952 the term ’polo’ shirt was already being used by tennis players and manufacturers.
The popularity of the easy to wear Fred Perry’s polo shirt quickly spread beyond the sporting fraternity and it became popular for work and leisure. In the late 1950′s and through to the 1970′s it became part of the emerging youth cult and was a ‘badge’, firstly for the ‘Mods’ and later for other diverse teenage groups. This was a defining period for the polo shirts we buy today. When Fred Perry first put his name to polo shirts you could have any colour just as long as it was white. Young people were now demanding brighter colours – and they got them.
One of the reasons that polo shirts have stood the test of time is their sheer versatility and ability to meet the challenges of each new generation. Combining good looks with durability, modern polo shirts have that air of ’smartness’ that make them acceptable when a T shirt just won’t do. With a wide range of bang up to date colours and designs which look good with just about any clothes combination – jeans, trousers, shorts or jackets the Fred Perry polo is the first choice for work, leisure and sport. Denims4u.co.uk have a wide range of Fred Perry polo shirts, all with the distinctive laurel crest : our stable of polo shirts have all the style and breeding you expect from the classic Fred Perry polo shirt. With a stunning selection of styles, plain and contemporary colour combinations, and with many subtle nuances of design and detail to choose from you are sure to find a polo shirt as individual as you are.

Men’s jeans are big business and the top designers innovations are closely scrutinised each season often resulting in affordable high street versions. Many people still prefer, however to buy designer. And for some it’s that choice that sorts the men from the boys.

C.C. Hudson from Spring Hill Farm in Tennessee left his home in 1897 to find work in the growing town of Greenboro, North Carolina. He got a job in a textile factory that made overalls. In 1904 this factory was shutting down Hudson saw his chance. He and some friends bought a couple of sewing machines, rented a small business space and opened their own company: the Hudson Overall Company.
They started out well and grew steadily. In 1919 saw a name change to “Blue Bell Overall Company”. Business was booming for the following years and in 1926 the company was sold for $585,000 to “Big Ben Manufacturing of Kentucky” but the company name “Blue Bell Overall Company” stayed and the business had still their headquarter in Greensboro. It wasn’t still the first space they rented in 1904 but a larger factory space to where they had moved in 1919.
In 1936 the company introduced a new fabric that limited the shrinking after washing to under 1%. This invention kick started sales again and the company grew. In 1943 they acquired a company named “Casey Jones Work-Clothes” and with it a brand name that would make them famous in the future: That brand name was “Wrangler”.

The phrase “blue jeans” comes from the French language “bleu de Gênes”, literally the blue of Genoa. Jeans fabric, or denim, originated in the southern french town of Nîmes and owes its name to the location. In the French language, the fabric was known as “cotton de Nîmes,” in French pronounced “de Nîmes” which abroad quickly became just “denim.” The first mens jeans were made in Italy more than 500 years ago in the 1500s. These jeans were sold through the harbour of Genoa.
The first examples of mens jeans were made for the Genoese Navy, which required tough all duty trousers for its matelots. They required strong and durable trousers that could be worn wet or dry, the legs of which could easily be rolled up whilst the sailors undertook all the dirty jobs involved in running the ship. These mens jeans were cleaned by dragging them in big nets behind the ship, and the exposure to sea water and sun would gradually bleach the tough blue jeans to white
Men’s jeans are arguably the mainstay of men’s clothing. While many wardrobes these days won’t include a suit most men have at least one pair of jeans. A survey by a leading London University revealed that many people questioned stated that jeans were their most personal and comfortable item of clothing.
Historically men’s jeans were essential men’s clothing for manual workers in America. Tough hard wearing and practical they were designed to last. Today they are still bought for those same features but have now evolved into the mainstay of men’s work and fashion clothing world wide.
Jeans have been around for eons but that doesn’t mean they can be taken for granted. One size certainly doesn’t fit all! Jeans are always changing and that includes style, fit and finish. The choices range from, boot cut, stone washed, easy fit, flared, straight and skinny to name but just a few. There are two processes involved in the finishing, dry and washed. The washed variety have the advantage of being softer and pre-shrunk. The dry version acquires the distressed look of washed denim over time.. Apparently some advocates of dry denim refrain from washing new jeans for several months, hanging them to dispel the smell!
Men’s jeans are big business and the top designers innovations are closely scrutinised each season often resulting in affordable high street versions. Many people still prefer, however to buy designer. Currently there appears to be renewed interest in the 1950’s styles in particular the classic Levi 501 look.
It is possible to pay hundreds of pounds for state of the art men’s jeans. It is also possible to purchase good value for money men’s jeans that are stylish, practical and durable – the choice is yours. Any good supplier of men’s clothing will offer a wide range of men’s jeans to suit all shapes sizes and budgets. Check out our men’s clothing range for just the right jeans to add to your collection.
Men jeans, timeless, ageless and classless. Worn for work and leisure, worn for impact, worn with a suit jacket. Whatever the occasion always worn with panache.
