Button Badges were originally invented by a American company based in New Jersey called Whitehead and Hoag and that was in 1896. They were responsible for several novelty items one of which came to produce was a button for holding up men’s trousers. This first and original button was made using a unique process which involved a piece of cloth being placed over a metal shell. A metal collar was then pressed into the back holding the piece of cloth in place and stretching it tight across the front of the shell. Eventually in 1896 this was modified to manufacture “all classes of jewelry such as cuff-buttons, and especially link buttons, stick-pins, badges (and) brooches”.
